Important Tax Return Dates
Tax Returns Due
This year's tax return deadline is April 17, 2018. You have until Tuesday, April 17th to file your 2017 tax returns and pay any tax due. This may be confusing, as tax day is usually April 15. Because of the 15th falling on the weekend, and the Emancipation Holiday in Washington, D.C., being observed on Monday, April 16th, you'v got until the 17th this year!
Tax forms for Your Investment Accounts
1099s from TD Ameritrade and other custodians are to be mailed and available online by February 15th. You may receive your form earlier.
Did you know that Investment Custodians have until February 15th to mail these out due to the fact that they can be more complicated than some other 1099s and W-2s? Their deadline was changed from January 31st to February 15th back in 2008. This decreases the amount of corrected 1099s that get sent out.
IRA & Roth IRA Contributions
Any contributions that you wish to make for 2017 to Roth IRA or IRA accounts need to be processed by April 17th. That is right, you have until April 17th to make contributions for last year! The contribution limits for 2017 per person are $5,500 up to age 49 and $6,500 if you are 50+. If you wish to make a 2017 Roth IRA or IRA contribution, please contact us.
Tax Return Extensions
April 17 is also the deadline for K-1s to be mailed, however they may be mailed prior to this. Not everyone receives K-1s but if you do, you may consider filing an extension for your tax return. If you need to file an extension for any reason, it must be submitted by April 17.
